CES 2017 Recap - A Bright Outlook for the Connected Home

By Thread Group

The Smart Home Marketplace at CES 2017 was dominated by the sheer volume of connected devices on display, affirming the need for an IP-based convergence to help connect and control these products in the home, and beyond. At the show, we saw strong evidence and resonance that IP-based technologies and ecosystems based on them are where the future of the smart home lies.

According to an article featured on The Verge: "The smart home story of CES is usually about how it's getting easier and cheaper to build connected tech into your home. Although true again this year another angle of the story seemed to take center stage last week: How so many of our gadgets are suddenly able to talk to each other. For example, CES 2017 showcased appliances making some truly smart integrations with Amazon's Alexa, Nest's Protect, and, of course, iOS and Android as well."

Attendees experienced this collaboration first hand at the Thread Group booth, where 17-member companies hosted demonstrations showcasing seamless connectivity built on the Thread networking technology. The demos represented various aspects of the Thread ecosystem: silicon solutions, software stacks, RF modules, reference designs and end products. These companies included Altiux, Dialog Semiconductor, Google, Haiku Home, Legrand, Linx Technologies, Nest, Nortek, NXP Semiconductor, OSRAM, Samsung, Schneider Electric, Silicon Labs, Yale, Resolution Products, Rigado, Texas Instruments and Tridonic.

Ecosystems

According to MultiChannel News: CES 2017: Partnerships, Integrated Ecosystems Will Drive Smart Home Scale. Thread is focused on the networking layer and is collaborating with several liaison partners and member companies to provide application layers that run on top of Thread. Three of these ecosystems were showcased as part of the demonstrations.

Thread Group liaison partner zigbee saw a great deal of buzz around their newly-announced dotdot, a universal language for IoT. The Thread Group and zigbee alliance jointly demonstrated successful product integrations running dotdot over Thread networks in their booths. This marks an important milestone in their collaboration as the two organizations work to release end-to-end product development solutions.

Google and Nest provided a demonstration of Weave, the technology that enables devices to communicate securely and reliably to each other, the cloud and mobile, as well as interact with Google services.

And, the demonstrations by Samsung and Legrand implemented Open Connectivity Forum's IoTivity open source software, which enables seamless and reliable device-to-device connectivity.

Key Takeaway

CES 2017 saw a marked increase in the sheer number of devices on display, including shockingly thin and flexible TV monitors, self-driving cars, sophisticated virtual and augmented reality experiences, voice-controlled personal assistants and robots, as well as increasingly functional and thoughtfully-designed smart home tech. Across the board, reporters and analysts share the expectation that connected home devices will work together seamlessly. Thread's technology - which will be widely available in the coming months -- is well-positioned to address this need by delivering a low-power, secure converged IP-based network solution that is compatible with multiple, concurrent application layers.
